Nothing is Inevitable

In recent talks with Walker supporters there have been some disheartening trends that I have noticed.

First, is the idea that teachers, who are upset with their collective bargaining rights taken away, should just give up and stop being teachers. This is a sad development. What I don’t understand is how these people see education as a part of our society. Shouldn’t it be a goal of the state to attract good teachers? Stripping these rights(and these are rights) and demonizing teachers does not make Wisconsin seem very teacher friendly.  The long term damages of Walker’s actions, I believe, are going to be very bad.

Second, is that many people do not understand what the issues really are. As a social studies teacher, I implore all of you to read about what collective bargaining rights are, what unions do, and the effects of Walker’s actions have been and do so from many sources.  Stop just listening to talk radio. Talk to teachers. We’re pretty good people if you give us a chance.

The last thing that I came across was the idea that losing these rights are inevitable.  I don’t understand this at all. Nothing in life is inevitable, except death.  Since death is inevitable, does that mean we should just give up living? No way, we should fight to live and live to the best of our abilities.  What does the message of “Give Up” send to people or kids? My worldview is centered around the idea that you should always fight for what is right.

The idea of inevitability is one that politicians and news media folks want people to believe.  That you, the citizen, can do nothing to change the world around them.  It makes their jobs of controlling everything a lot easier.  But, you should understand and live your life knowing it’s not true!

I will “Wake Up and Fight” everyday.  That’s who I am.  I’m not planning on changing.  Recall Walker!
